Around the Devils Blogosphere- 01.09.08
Even though the Devils were not in action today, their loyal bloggers provided us with creative and original content, as always. The Devils practiced today before they fly out to Carolina for a 7:00 p.m. Thursday night showdown. There were few differences at practice, other than Jay Pandolfo’s solo skate around, and Karel Rachunek’s return. Both skaters are unlikely to play in Raleigh, but are progressing. We should have a more thorough preview for the game by tomorrow morning/ early afternoon. In the meanwhile, enjoy John Fischer, Pookie and Partricia Greuter, as they take us through the land of Make Believe, who continue to follow Devils hockey and even spice things up with a blog or two.
Over at In Lou with Trust, John Fischer similarly compared the Devils 2-1 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres to December 28's meeting between the two teams. Fischer also briefly previewed the Devils upcoming matchup with the Hurricanes.
He noted that "only 3 teams in the NHL have given up more goals than Carolina." Let's see if the Devils can take care of business against the Eastern Conference’s third seed and the southeastern division-leading Hurricanes. In my estimation, the Devils should win 3-1 or 4-1 depending on the Hurricanes’ pulling their goalie. The Hurricanes are struggling and barely beat Boston on Tuesday 1-0 after losing to St. Louis 1-0. They are struggling right now to play consistent hockey and the Devils are the better team coming into the game.
Pookie, from Interchangable Parts, selected an all-Devils All Star Starting Lineup and told NHL fans why their selections were inaccurate. Aside from Martin Brodeur, of course, who will be starting for the fourth time in his career.
Some of the post's highlights included a "bashing" of Sidney Crosby, noting that, "Has he ever been asked to play wing on the fourth line? Yeah, we didn’t think so."
In addition, Pookie described Vincent Lecavalier, the starting forward, " might be leading the league in scoring, but the guy’s team is a train wreck." Truthfully, the Lightning stink. How can a team that has scored 124 goals thus far be in last place? Goaltending. Holmqvist, Ramo and Denis have combined for a 3.27 goals against and .883SV%. That explains a lot. I personally would recommend a trade. Lecavalier is not going anywhere. St. Louis and Ricahrds are more likely candidates, but their contracts are overpriced and difficult to handle, especially with the hard salary cap. Sucks to be a Lightning fan right now. Seriously.
At 2 Man Advantage, Patricia Greuter takes us back to the Devils' loss to the Boston Bruins this past weekend. Do you remember that game? Well, I would have suggested possibly scoring more than three goals on 45 shots, including only one goal on 20 shots during the third frame. Yikes. Doc and Chico were also talking about who the heck knows during their broadcast.
Apparently, Greuter has some insight for us on their yakking through her sources and inside scoop (jk). She said that they spent much of their play-by-play time talking about a hot Devils prospect, 19-year-old Matt Halischuk. Patricia offered a detailed scouting report on Halischuk. If you an avid follower of the minor leagues or go to sleep every night praying that Sidney Crosby gets traded to the New Jersey Devils, this is a must read.
You must read it anyway, just for humor's sake and for general Devil minutia. I certainly did.
Once again, Devils bloggers show how their coverage is just as good as the professionals themselves (all three Devils beat writers, who have barely covered road trips). Seriously, when the Devils traveled to Western Canada, I am not sure if Tom Guliti or Mark Everson made the journey. Blame it on the weather conditions (nope, sorry), or the travel expenses (cmon, I could afford Canada), or maybe even Everson lost his passport. Ah, I get it now. Everything is clarified and I can surely sleep better at night. Whatever.
And, that's today's edition of "Around the Devils Blogosphere."
