Breaking News: Sidney Crosby Back in Lineup, Will Play Tonight

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that captain and reigning MVP Sidney Crosby will return to the lineup tonight against Tampa Bay. Crosby missed 21 games due to a high ankle sprain he suffered on Jan. 18. The team originally expected Crosby to return mid-March, so this is a surprise. Whether Crosby can make a successful comeback will arguably determine the Penguins regular season and postseason hopes.

During his absence, the Penguins registered a 11-6-4 record, utilizing Evgeni Malkin’s dominance (36 points in last 21 games) and goalie Ty Conklin, who continues to shine as Marc-Andre Fleury’s injury replacement. However, Fleury recently returned to the rotation, appearing twice (Feb. 28, March 2). In the latter appearance, Fleury started, earning the win while saving 31 of 33 shots in the Penguins 3-2 shootout effort.

Meanwhile, the Penguins acquired sharpshooter Marian Hossa from Atltanta at the trade deadline, solidifying their offensive strength and justifying their positioning with the upcoming playoffs next month. Hossa’s debut lasted less than 60 minutes, injuring his right knee and suffering a first-degree MCL. The Penguins expect to miss Hossa for about one week, meaning he won’t suit up versus the Lightning.

Despite recent struggles (2-2-2), the Penguins advanced into the Eastern Conference lead with 81 points. Montreal also maintains the same number of points, yet holds onto the conference’s second seed due to the tiebreaker procedures. New Jersey and Ottawa remain in fourth and fifth, each containing 80 points. The Devils visit Toronto tonight with a chance to return to the driver’s seat. The Senators failed last night in their rematch with the Anaheim Ducks, who defeated them in last season’s Stanley Cup Finals

I added Crosby's shootout winner in the Winter Classic. Enjoy.
