Devils Broadcast History Timeline
Instead of sleeping last night, I worked hard to locate the New Jersey Devils broadcast information. It wasn't easy. I had to assassinate four dead monkeys and two live chickens to find all of this information. Just kidding. Only one chicken. In all seriousness, this is the most accurate non-official timeline dating back to 1986. Unfortunately, I am not sure who broadcasted Devils games on the radio and on television before the year of the NY Mets last World Series Win.
There are many interesting tibits. I recommend clicking on the links to confirm the authenticity of my dates. But, at the same time, please don't just take advantage of the hard work I put in, to educate the youth and advanced alike on important Devils trivia and history.
Be a part of it. Enjoy it. Enjoy the sounds of Mike "Doc" Emrick, one of the legendary play-by-play announcers. Read about radio announcer's Mike Miller's fight with cancer, which he overcame. Miller, who was the voice of New Jersey for nine years (unofficial), at one point called 1,741 straight games, whereas Doc had broken the 2,000 mark in 1999. Understand why GM Lou Lamoriello, who we love and cherish for the success that he has brought us over the past two decades, fired the radio broadcast group of John Hennessy and Randy Velischek. Unlike nowadays, where everybody can watch a game on TV or TIVO, I have listened to dozens of their smooth audio ingenuity (if that makes sense). Of, course, Hennessy was the the voice of the Albany River Rats, before filling in for an ailing Miller, who eventually resigned.
In the meanwhile, the Devils, who used to be on WABC 770AM, signed an agreement with the flag ship station, 660AM in 2004. Truthfully, I preferred the Devils on their original radio network. I will always miss Hennesy and Velischek and Miller, who broadcasted while I was still in my youth.
One of the fondest memories I have of Miller was his call during the Stanley Cup Finals against Dallas, especially in the clinching game 6 win. My family had just finished a holiday celebration in the D.C. area and we were driving home that night. I actually tried to stay awake and listen to the broadcast, but I fell asleep. My brother woke me and told me that the Devils won the Cup. I still remember Miller's voice, which definitely struggled as a result of the cancer. Nevertheless, I saw Arnott's Cup-winning goal in double overtime with Gary Thorne behind the booth.
My brother and father attended game seven against Anaheim, leaving me at home to study for a math exam. I will never forgive them for the gesture. Just kidding. I enjoyed every last second of the contest vs. Anaheim and still believe that Martin Brodeur deserved the Conn Smythe. Arrogant bastards gave it to JS Giguere.
From Brendon Byrne to Continental Airlines Arena to their new home at the Prudential Center, the Devils' announcers on TV and via radio have not lost a beat. They are truly the best in the business.
Anyway, enjoy the list. Tune in tonight. The Devils are back on tap.
The good ole days. Fond memories. Devils Hockey.
