Devils Never Surrender, Fight for 60 Minutes Each Night
Ethan's recap was right on about the game Saturday night as our New Jersey Devils beat the Buffalo Sabres (again, again and a third time) in another shootout 3-2.
One thing that I love about the Devils, especially this season, is their ability to never succomb even after falling behind in games. Being down 2-0 about 10 minutes into the opening frame means a loss for most teams. It means finish the last 50 minutes or so, hopefully not in a blowout defeat.
But, the Devils never surrender. Buffalo learned the hard way on Saturday night.
As I have said before, most, if not all of my friends are New York Rangers fans (I know I need new friends!). I was stuck watching the Rangers game Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens. At commercials, we would flip back to the Devils game.
The following story happened. I am not kidding. Rangers fans still believe that their team can turn the corner and finally win their first Cup since 1994.
Of course, my friends mentioned the Devils' early 2-0 deficit and the "big turn-around" that the Rangers needed to start to climb the ladder and challenge for the Atlantic Division. I just sat back, smiled and laughed.
As the game grew older and it was apparent the Rangers were going to gain two points (a rarity lately), I convinced the "boys" to watch the end of the Devils game.
One of them said, "I'll watch them lose sure," which delighted me.
The score was 2-1in favor of Buffalo, but that is when the tide turned. The Devils pressured and played their usual tight defense. The game-tying-goal was inevitable, thanks to intelligent passing and David Clarkson. It sent me into a frenzy and the Rangers fans into a lull.
We all know the end result of the Devils winning in a shootout on goals from Zach Parise and Patrik Elias. As usual, Martin Brodeur was stellar, shutting down both of the Buffalo shooters that he faced, including Ales Kotalik, who was 2-2 this season in the shootout against Brodeur.
After the Devils came from behind yet again this season, Rangers fans talked about how the Devils are hot, are winning with "nobodies" and how good Zach Parise is in our sport.
Most notably, the Rangers fans described seemingly envied the Devils for never surrendering, even on the road against a difficult (yet struggling) Buffalo, a feat uncommon by many teams throughout the league.
Maybe, they envy the Devils as well.
While the Devils gained two points from the victory, I think that game against Buffalo sums up why the New Jersey Devils are so successful and have been for the last many many years.
