Dress Warmly, It's Cold Outside

Dress warmly.  It's winter time, which means college football is around the corner.  Specifically, on New Year's Day, the schedule-makers "force" us to watch at least one of five separate Bowl Games, unless you have a split-screen technology and can watch the University of Florida defeat the University of Michigan, and Virginia and Texas Tech touch gloves, fight to the death, sorry I've been watching Ultimate Fighting Championship on the tube.

From my previous experience, everybody loves college football the night after crazy, intense partying.  Here's the bowl schedule for Jan. 1, 2008.  But, for some reason, the NHL decided to infiltrate college football fanatics with an outdoor ice hockey game between Pittsburgh and Buffalo to be played at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY at 1p.m.

Cotton
Dallas
Missouri vs. Arkansas Jan. 1, 11:30 a.m. FOX
Gator
Jacksonville, Fla.
Texas Tech vs. Virginia Jan. 1, 1 p.m. CBS
Capital One
Orlando, Fla.
Michigan vs. Florida Jan. 1, 1 p.m. ABC
Rose
Pasadena, Calif.
Southern California vs. Illinois Jan. 1, 4:30 p.m. ABC
Sugar
New Orleans
Hawaii vs. Georgia Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m. FOX

Personally, I love the idea of playing hockey outdoors.  For starters, it's a winter sport.  This does not mean that every winter activity must be completed in the frigid, windy conditions ala football.  On the other hand, why is hockey competing with college football?

The league knew many months in advance that bowl games always occur on New Year's.  Then again, the NJ Devils and NJ Nets must have ended their relationship at the Meadowlands on bad terms.  Why else would they schedule 13 games on the same dates (12 that overlapped)?

I was reading through the 2008 NHL WINTER CLASSIC FACT SHEET... and I stumbled upon this.

"AMP ENERGY / NHL Winter Classic Pre-Game Celebration
Spectator Plaza
in Parking Lot C opens at 8:00AM.  Join the NHL for live music with Nik and the Nice Guys.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase.   Retail outlets will be on location."

Great. Entertainment. Wait!!! 8 a.m. Are they deliberating trying to freeze the fans five hours before they drop the puck.  Who cares.

I love the idea.  It worked in the past if I recall correctly.

Enjoy the NHL's version of the ice bowl.  The forecast looks much better than the -17oC back in Edmonton.  That's a positive.

And the game is getting a lot of coverage, which is always good.
