Sutter Challenges Captain

During the Devils telecast Saturday night, TV cameras showed Devils coach Brent Sutter yelling at captain Jamie Langenbrunner on the bench. Apparently, Langenbrunner lost coverage on Jack Johnson, who scored the Kings second goal, Tom Gulitti noted on his blog. Gulitti reported that Sutter and Langs are still on good terms regardless of what happened on the bench.

In the Devils convincing 6-3 effort on Saturday night, Langenbrunner had assisted on their third goal before Sutter rebuked him for laziness in the defensive end. I was disappointed that Langenbrunner responded to Sutter's chewing him out, but I understand that both guys are professionals and things can get excited in the heat of the moment.

“I’m not going to change as a coach,” Sutter told Gulitti after a brief Sunday morning practice. “I’ve challenged players on benches before in junior and it’s happened with this team before this. This situation just happened where everyone saw it and it was the captain. But, I’ve never once held something personal against a player from a confrontation between a player and myself _ever.”

With Pittsburgh visiting on Monday night, I can assure you that the matter is in the past. Maybe, Pittsburgh will send a reporter unlike the LA Times, which relied on an incorrect description of the Devils location.

The Devils only need to win about 50 percent of the final 30 games to clinch a spot in the playoffs
