Devils to Start Weekes Tonight?

From what I have been reading online, Kevin Weekes will be in goal for the Devils tonight against the Florida Panthers. This news was finally announced at the morning skate, before tonight's game at 7:00PM, to be aired on FSNY 2 and WFAN 660AM on the radio.

Netminder Martin Brodeur started Thursday night, head coach Brent Sutter's first Devils game, a 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay. He stopped 21 of 23 shots in the process. Brion Gionta tallied the lone goal, a power play deflection midway through the first period. Martin St. Louis scored the next two in the contest, including the game winner, before the Lightning scored an empty netter with under a minute remaining.

Brodeur returned to New York after the game with general manager Lou Lamoriello citing "personal reasons" according to Tom Gulitti, at Fire and Ice.

Brodeur has been very successful against the Panthers going 30-10-0 with seven ties and a 1.96 goals-against average in 47 lifetime games.

His backup, Kevin Weekes, would be starting his first game since Jan. 11, a span of nearly ten months. He faced a heavy load of shots in the morning skate according to Gulitti.

I am satisfied with Sutter's decision to start Weekes under the circumstances.

With a visit to Ottawa coming Monday, the Panthers might seem the likely foe for Weekes' Devils debut, although they're coming back here Thursday according to Mark Everson of the New York Post.

Weekes, get ready for round one. If you or the Devils do not win tonight, be prepared for a stretch on the bench. That is a big if of course.
