Devils lose to the Flyers- Brodeur Where Are You?
The Devils lost tonight, in a shameful performance on both ends of the ice. They managed a commanding 38-18 shot lead, but were shutout 4-0. John Madden had a breakaway at the end of the second period, but was denied by goaltender Martin Biron, who completed his second consecutive scoreless outing.
Brodeur faced 18 shots, that's all, and had 14 total saves. What the heck is going on with him? Is he injured or just not playing well? In his career, Brodeur has never played this poorly as a starter. I am not accustomed to him giving up this many goals on so few shots. Traditionally, the Devils are a strong team defensively, so Brodeur might have given up one or two goals on less than 20 or 25 shots. But these numbers place him at the bottom of the league in goals against average and saves percentage.
I remember assistant coach Larry Robinson saying how Kevin Weekes was going to start tonight. He better be starting on Saturday night against the New York Islanders. I do not care if Brodeur has the best record against the Islanders, he flat out sucks right now. Weekes looked sharp in his only start, a victory no less. Brodeur is 2-4, what the heck.
I am stunned right now. Wondering if Brodeur is going to shape up, the Devils cannot afford these kind of performances every game. They might have a new head coach Brent Sutter who likes to pressure the puck, but the Devils were 0 for 7 on the power play. They allowed 1 of the 4 Flyers man advantages to score, adding to their last place in the NHL... DEAD LAST. Nobody is behind them. Last year, the Devils finished in the top four in penalty kills. It's not even like they are committing the most penalties. They are 19th in penalty minutes.
Sutter, figure out a way to score on the man advantage. I do not care if the opposing goaltender has the best game of his life. You should be able to score on at least 1 of every 5 or 6. Gather your troops for the Islanders, who won tonight. I do not want the Devils to lose to the lowly Islanders, whose best player, Bill Guerin is nearly 38 years of age. He is definitely living up the free agent signing, with a hat trick tonight and six more assists on the season.
Sutter complained to the media about their questions concerning the extended road trip. He did not want to hear about i- rightfully so. But, please take your team, fix the problems before Saturday. They cannot afford another demoralizing loss. I know that there are only two more games until the Prudential Center opens and there are still 70 plus games remaining in the season. However, they need to start playing more consistently. Danius Zubrus looks like the worst free agent signing this off-season. And GM Lou Lamoriello gave him a six year contract? What was he thinking? Zach Parise and Paul Martin were a combined 0 for 14 tonight in their shots on goal. How is a team supposed to win with those numbers? Please, someone enlighten me. Rod Pelley was on the ice for 8:29 and had a -3. I probably should not be concerned that much with tonight's awful loss, especially with so many more important games ahead. But, when a team has 38 shots on goal and zero tallies to show for it, someone has to show anger, be upset at this miserable performance on the ice. No excuses when a team has that many power plays, opportunities to score, breakaways, 2 on 1 break outs... except when your goaltender stinks...
Due to the fact that I do not have picture in picture, I will be at the bars watching your Devils and the Scarlet Knights soon... Please forgive me- Dude Joel will have the recap after the game and I will have a comment or two later!
8:50 Still tied 0-0... I had a feeling that both teams would come out firing, but perhaps this game would be low scoring nevertheless... to be determined....
12:00 remaining in the first period... one minute left on the Devils PK
The Devils Arron Asham decided to end their power play with a boarding call. Good job idiot.
By the way, the Devils are on the power play for the second consecutive night, The Flyers just killed off two penalty kills. Damn it...
Although assistant coach Larry Robinson said that the plan was to start backup Kevin Weekes, Marty would be in net tonight. Tom Gulliti had this update a little after 3p.m. this afternoon. Sorry for not mentioning it earlier.
