This is a metric of popularity we fans don't look at too often.  It's the amount of search traffic done on a keyword phrase in Google.  Take a look at the below results for "new jersey devils" (red) and "new york rangers" (blue).  This isn't really surprising consider the Devils are up against a New York team, but looking around on Google Trends teams like the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins both have more.  Notice also the search traffic during one of the worst years for hockey.
