Say Goodbye to Richard Matvichuk

The New Jersey Devils officially said adios to thirty-four-year-old defenseman Richard Matvichuk.  Well, they placed him on waivers and there is a very small window that he will return to the team sometime in the near future.  I am still bewildered by GM Lou Lamoriello's decision to cut ties with Matvichuk, a veteran Dallas Stars defenseman, especially during a time period when the Devils are lacking in the defense department.

The Devils have allowed 39 goals in 13 games this season coming into tonight, including at least one power play effort in 11 of those matches.  They are in second to last place on the penalty kill with an abysmal 71.7% efficiency.  And Lamoriello thinks that some team will pick up Richie and his $1.368 million contract, considering his age among other factors.  The Devils were unable to organize a trade with another team for Matvichuk's services, before deciding to place him on waivers.

I hope that another team has a need for Richie, even with his rather high contract for an older, yet wiser player...
