Devils Welcome Brodeur to Elite 500 Club, Take Care of Flyers
New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur earned milestone win No. 500 over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night... congratulations to Marty and his family... you could even see a smile across his face (under that mask) after the final horn sounded...
A few things that caught my eye... the Devils are 2-1 against the Flyers this season and have beaten them 6-2 and 4-1 the last two games... if only Marty who has had much success against his rivals and the Dev could play Philly several more times in the next few weeks…it’s weird – the Devils inconsistent play somehow is erased when they play Philly…
Even though the Jersey Gardeners could not score on the power play (one of their goals was scored a few seconds after the PP ended), they were very efficient with the puck…they also killed off a four-minute double-minor penalty by not allowing a shot on goal…this game reminds me of the Rangers in years past who would struggle to make the playoffs, but play their best game against the Devils…
Brian Gionta definitely scored the game’s finest most interesting goal…a backhander over backup goaltender’s Antero Nittymaki’s left shoulder… I think its sufficient to say that no Flyers had a good day including Nittymaki, who replaced Martin Biron (18 saves on 22 shots), with less success (0 saves on 2 shots)…
Surprisingly, two Devils defensemen… veteran Karel Rachunek and rookie Andy Greene lead the team with a plus/minus of +10 and +9…it’s great to see the blueliners step up their game…
Not surprisingly, Zach Parise manufactured the most points thus far… 6G, 12A en route to this 18 points… including three points last night (1G, 2A)
Credit Danius Zubrus, Patrik Elias, and the rest of the Devils for scoring six goals from six different players and holding Philly scoreless on its six power plays
