What I Learned This Past Weekend in Sports
New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur accomplished a feat like none other on Saturday night against the Philadelphia Flyers... unfortunately, the mass media cared more about Alex Rodriguez's baseball contract... lets' get this straight- the Wall Street Journal contained not one but at least two articles on A-Rod's current situation...
Brodeur won his 500th career game and barring any future injuries, will eventually pass Patrick Roy and his 551 wins as the winningest goalie of all time. Right now, Rodriguez is 32 and slugged 518 career dingers… but he’s 200 away from the all-time record (he’s not expected to break it until 2012, 2013 the latest) whereas Brodeur is 51 away from the all-time wins record, something that Brodeur will most likely break by the end of next season... you be the judge…
Does Arod deserve all this attention for someone who has never won a World Series, in fact he’s never been to the Series even on the most expensive payroll in baseball or should a three-time Stanley Cup Trophy holder receive attention for an amazing feat?
We all know that hockey is less popular than ESPN’s coverage of the World Series of Poker from 1952 last year… Therefore, the media has an obligation to honor Brodeur, popularize the sport for at least one day… give credit to a professional athlete as successful as Marty- throughout his incredible career in New Jersey... if Marty were a baseball or football star… there is no doubt that he would be a guest on David Letterman’s Late Night Show the next night…
