Devils Give Extra-Special Effort in Win over Penguins
Two for six on the man advantage and zero for four on penalty kill. Words that may not been associated with the Devils during their earlier stretch of the current season. This is the new Devils apparently, who won their second straight last night over the Penguins 2-1.
Goaltender Martin Brodeur squashed so many shots with his glove that the Devils color commentator Glen "Chico" Resch said, “I wanna take that glove at the end of this game and send it right to the hockey hall of fame…”
I'll be honest. I have a feeling that Marty might have struggled a bit going 5-10-1 while allowing too many goals. However, he stepped up the last two games, making unbelievable saves against Daniel Briere and then on Sidney Crosby, who had a shorthanded breakaway attempt.
Zach Parise might not wear the C, but he sure is the team's captain thus far... he scored two important power play tallies last night, both assisted by Jamie Langenbrunner who has four points in four games since returning from offseason surgery.
Colin White also played last night, his first game this season after enduring a nasty inadvertent puck-to-the-eye injury during training camp. I'm not sure if he was vocal in the locker room before the game but he certainly played with a chip on his shoulder, leading a physical and intelligent defensive performance in 17:25 of ice time.
Perhaps, one of the most important plays of the game -- Devils were fighting off a two man advantage and White lifted the stick of the Penguins player in front of the net, preventing him from deflecting the puck past Brodeur…
The Devils played a defensively “boring” style of play, limiting Crosby to two shots on goal and not many good looks either. I’ll take this style any day of the week, don’t care if you fall asleep watching the game…
They also held Crosby (19 game point streak) and Penguins power play scoreless… the Devils have now killed off 13 consecutive power plays dating back the past four games… after allowing 20 PPG the first 17 games of the season…
Johnny Oduya’s stupid, stupid own-zone turnover led to the Penguins only goal an unassisted tally by Evgeni Malkin, and prevented Brodeur from earning his first shutout of the year…
Maybe, Oduya would not have played if Paul Martin and Karel Rachunek were in the lineup… Martin is nursing a lower body injury he suffered against the Rangers last week and Rachunek welcomed a newborn son in New Jersey, preventing them from contributing and putting Oduya out of the lineup where he belongs… I mean this is not his first error this season- he aint getting any sympathy from me – that’s all I am saying…
Big win for the Devils, two power play goals, they stopped the Penguins on all four of their power plays, including a 5 on 3 for half a minute… in the final period nonetheless…
Happy Thanksgiving everyone…
