NJSEA- Stop Bashing the Rock Please
That's right George R. Zoffinger, President and CEO of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, NJSEA. Take some responsibility for a change. A difficult yet possible solution to your problem. Basically, little Georgie is upset that his rundown, dilapidated, never to be seen again Continental Airlines Arena’s two major sports are on the move (the Nets in the coming years), and its sponsor is adios. What did you expect after 26 years in an arena featuring 29 “state-of-the-art” suites, a lack of mass transportation? The first event took place on July 2, 1981 with a Bruce Springsteen concert. Once the Nets leave for good, to either Brooklyn as proposed or even Newark with the Devils in due time, Zoffinger can kiss the Meadowlands goodbye. He will have lost two popular teams to other cities due to his incompetence and stubbornness. Why could the NJSEA, owners of the Meadowlands never build mass transportation for access to basketball and hockey games or most importantly, the two NFL teams? A small city, East Rutherford with four major sports teams lacking mass transportation outlets, near New York City. Now, it is being built with The Meadowlands Xanadu (more on this later) on the forecast. Shameful, disgraceful. Zoffinger, you had to see this coming, didn’t you? 26 years later George is upset that the New Jersey Devils and Nets are both planning on leaving in the near future. The Devils are scheduled to open the first arena in the New York Metropolitan Area in over 25 years, the Prudential Center aka the Rock in late October. The Nets have other plans after being purchased by real estate mogul Bruce Ratner. He plans to move them to Brooklyn, NY to the Barclays Center by the 2009-2010 season. We shall see if his plan comes to fruition. Personally, Mr. Ratner- I am not a firm believer in your plan to move them to New York. Maybe because I am a Jersey boy, born and raised to attend many a nets game in my youth. Secondly, what is wrong with the Prudential Center? It is being constructed with one of the largest and advanced (3-D?) scoreboards in the country rivaling the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats built in 2005. I know what you are thinking… Holy Sh**. I was thinking the same thing when I caught a glimpse of the scoreboard. If someone can locate a solid video, feel free to email me a copy and I will place it on the site. Xanadu is a project to built entertainment and retail stores in the Meadowlands. New Jersey Transit is planning on extending one of its lines to the Sports Complex by year’s end. Bad timing huh? You still have the New York Football Giants and Jets who have “lifetime” contracts with the NJSEA. Just kidding- only 99 more years, which is one more year than I will live (it’s a religious dogma). If I am in a depressed or obnoxious mood, I will elaborate on this disappointing and mistimed billion dollar project. Yes, hard-working tax payers are being forced to spend money on a failed development. Add it to the list of blunders by our state government. I apologize about merging several topics into one blog. The focus was the New Jersey Devils. It is rather difficult in my opinion to mention the new arena without speaking of the old one- Continental Airlines Arena, the NJSEA, its incompetent president or the Meadowlands in general. I will attempt to cover the Devils in greater detail in the coming days as well as these various and significant issues. Stay tuned…
